This unit in Sociology is different and hard to grasp. We all have experiances of some sort of culture shock or ethnocentrism, but it was interesting to see this from the otherside. Currently in class we are in the middle of watching "God Grew Tired of Us". A brief overview of this movie would be how back in the 90's close to one hundred thousand underaged boys became refugees. They were from Sudan, but a war broke out between the north and south. With their parents either dead or not around these young boys desided to run away and escape the war. A few had the opportunity to come to the US and find work and earn an income.
When they arrived to America they had tons of culture shock. Having spent all of the lives in the deserts in Affrica, America was literally a concrete jungle to them. When they reached their apartment they were amused how easly they could make it light or dark with a light switch. Something as simple as a refrigerator to us, was complex and out of this world to these men. It was interesting thinking of experiances when I had culture shock, but seeing it from the otherside was really fascinating.
Adapting can be difficult and can be tricky to overcome.
ReplyDeleteI like how you connected the movie to our idea in class about culture shock!
